Black History Month 23

Mickalene Thomas.

Pupils liked at the awesome work of black artist Mickalene Thomas and produced their own black female icon collages. Whole school work: ages 4-19.

Black History Month October 22

To recognise and cerebrate Black History Month at TreeHouse we decided to learn about the Gee’s Bend Quilts. There’s a fascinating history around these quilts, which I won’t go into now but really recommend delving into. One interesting fact was that some of the intricate quilts had hidden codes, maps and information for the black slaves to communicate route and methods of escape to each other. That just blows my mind… the creativity and resourcefulness. Amazing. The quilts themselves are beautiful and we had a great couple of weeks making collages based on some of the more geometric of these quilts. Every child made one and we patch-worked them together to make huge pieces.

First picture is our main inspiration.

LGBTQ month 2024

To celebrate LGBTQ month at TreeHouse school we created string whip pictures. Pupils masked up the letters, depending on ability and then used all the rainbow colours to decorate the page. We used string with masking tape as handles on the end and pupils loved the action of whipping onto the page. Lots of laughter and joy over this activity. Results are awesome and made great posters for around the school.
