Ben Wilson aka Chewing Gum Man

Summer 2023 saw us fortunate enough to have the fantastic Ben Wilson come and work with our pupils. We designed our own chewing gum images which were informed by the idea of Activism. Ben chose his winners and pupils got their work reproduced on the streets of Muswell Hill.

Autumnal trees 2023

Primary SOW looking at autumn and focusing on painting and mark-making. Pupils drew trees and then traced these with masking tape. Next we layered autumnal colours using a variety of different tools like sponges, brushes and mainly our hands! Tapes was pulled off and different pens and mark making tools were used to re trace the trees branches and add leaves.

London Rainbows

Using straws to blow rainbow colours out from a central point to make a shape like the boroughs of London. Pupils then used graphic pens to outline the interesting shapes the liquid colours formed then add patterns to each section. #Pride #LGBTQ

Frottage fields

Primary SOW focusing on pattern within the theme of ‘On the Farm’. Pupils made an ink wash sky and created papers of coloured washes. We then created frottage plates to make oil pastel rubbings. These served as textures for filed to represent different crops. These were then patchworked together to make lovely farming pictures.

Tonal abstracts

Secondary years created beautiful abstract tonal pieces with a variety of media. We started by creating a mid tone on the paper by rubbing in charcoal with a tissue then using a rubber to remove it. There were many stages to follow which involved adding blacks and whites and everything in between in many different ways.
